I can’t write much!

As it stands as I type I’m turning 25! Yet I have to be at work at 0730 on the 19th so a big night out on my birthday is out of the question. So afternoon drinks with Jim and Rod (over from Paris should be order of the day - that and spending £1720 on 1 train ticket!)

Been out for a meal with folks which was good, then went to local for a couple of BEERS where I discovered Morgans Spiced Rum. (Hayford - I found it - more than u did in Plymouth!)

New job is going well, a lot calmer than the old one, despite the fact I have to use either the District, Victoria, Bakerloo, Jubilee, or Hammersmith and City Line!

Told you I couldn’t say much interesting, hence me not writing here often. Just been hunting on facebook for people I’ve lost touch with…

To be truthfully honest, I don’t know what to say.

As it stands, it is now Friday the 13th. In the past week I have conquered a fear, and made a huge step in life.

The fear I conquered is roller coasters. They terrify me. But on Easter Monday Jim (of lowerflat.com fame & James Bullock on my friends list!) persuaded me to go to Hayling Island funfair and ride the roller coaster. Only problem is I have a fear of the things, especially when they go upside down. Although Jim made me try it and I don’t know where the fear comes from. It was great fun! Following that we ended up on the log flume ride and between me and Jim, we had the highest body mass of the day - to great amusement of the watching crowd as we got drenched completely!

I also managed to squeeze in a oat trip from Westminster to Hampton Court with Andrew Williamson, another person on my friends list - not bad value for £9 and the weather was fantastic!

Meanwhile I am in the middle of a transition. I left my job on Good Friday. It was my last day in the office, although today is my last official day with the company, and I’m rostered a day off. So I have spent it with friends I haven’t seen for months at “The Brewery” in Ashtead, we did the quiz but came 4th.

Right - not a lot to say.

Mate got me a ticket to see the most boring football match of my life. Aston Villa vs Liverpool. I drove us up there, and Birmingham was quite nice.

Shame Liverpool couldn’t provide football as nice. The most boring 0-0 I could have possibly watched. At least on the drive home we got stuck in traffic. I say that as we were alongside a coach in a traffic jam.. The coach had on its TV (viewable from the cars either side) a hardcore porn film! We chuckled as we passed - how could the driver concentrate?

Meanwhile I have a new phone - an Orange SPV M700 (includes a GPS reciever). A very nice bit of kit - despite not working too well with my iBook G4. But I think I’ve passed that problem now.

Au Revoir!

I have really let this site slip.

The reasons are as follows:
1) I havent done much to write about.
2) When I do do something, I waffle on about it which is boring.
3) I’ve been busy changing jobs - well applying for one, am still yet to start and I applied in October!

So what have I been up to? Well New Year saw me head to Dublin with Jim, Rod and Alex. Rather than waffle on, Jim made a detailed post in his old blog which I’ll link to here.

I’ve also been to Holland 3 times - one a free trip with DFDS from Newcastle to Amsterdam, and I have just been on a mini-cruise to Santander.

Yesterday I handed in my 4 weeks notice to my employer, South West Trains. It’s time to move on to a new Employer, which will see me remain in the rail industry but working in the centre of London at Paddington. I only applied back in October.

So thats about it. I’ll try to post more regularly, but I fear it might return to waffle!

I also joined the facebook community last night, find my profile here:

A friend sent me this, so I had to share it.

Oh the days of Rainbow were simpler times :)

Well you haven’t heard a lot from me lately, but I have been very busy!

Other than a weekend in Falmouth to mark the passing of Mr W’s 21st, I’ve been in Canada the last 12 days. Annoying thing was the day before I went I went shopping to make sure I had enough shorts or the trip, but the weather on arrival back home was hotter than we’d had over there!

Did the usual touristy things such as Niagara Falls, CN Tower, Skydome – sorry Rogers Center as it’s called now but the main reason for going was to spend time with the family. Oh, and I’ve taken a liking Canadian beers ;) .

All in all a good trip, only let down by the cabin crew on the flight back. It was so hit and miss as to whether you would get what you were entitled to or not. The guy next to me got a cup of tea, I wasn’t offered and when I asked for one he went off to make it, only to return saying that he couldn’t as we were landing in 20 minutes. Why didn’t he just say so in the first place?

All my pictures are now on Flickr, click here.

Courtesy of my employer, all 5000+ of their staff got two free midweek tickets to the motorshow at ExCeL in London, so yesterday I opted to use them.

Meeting Jonathan at Wimbledon, it took us half an hour to get to the show, where upon entry the sheer size of it amazed. 1st on the agenda was to get all the outdoor interactive activities completed, before the queues got too long, and the temperatures too high. There were two off road experiences, one by Land Rover, and the other a large selection of cars. The Land Rover was eye opening, and the Discovery performed excellently, but our car for the larger course was a Kia Sorrento – surprisingly good!
Clarkson
The best outdoor activity was the Mazda Zoom-Zoom challenge. A chance to do the fastest possible lap in a Mazda MX-5 and the limited edition Mazda RX8 – PZ. And what a fantastic experience it was – for free! I thught I did OK, but I was scared that I might damage the cars, and didnt push them as hard as some others. As I got out, I heard Jonathans RX8-PZ squealing round the track!

The rest of the day was spent visiting the stands, and being somewhat unimpressed by the super cars. The Pagani Zonda looks nice, but it’s very very small… The Top Gear stand had some interesting exhibits, namely the 3 amphibious cars from the beginning of the current series.

Aston Martin RapideFord as per usual did something a bit different, and had an Ice Bar to showcase the S-Max, giving away much needed ice lollies to everyone! All the Ford companies had stands in the same place, and Aston Martin wasn’t far away, showcasing their new 4 door saloon, the Rapide. Four door cars shouldn’t look this good.

However for me, I was hunting to see what cars I could be purchasing for myself in a years time. The Ford Focus could be out of my price range, as could the Vauxhall Astra. Looks likely that I will stick with a supermini, and likely to be a better equipped Ibiza to my current model. However a Seat Altea, Seat Leon, Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Citroen C4, Vauxhall Corsa (the new one does appear to have grown up), and Peugeot 207 are all strong contenders. That’s a lot of test drives!

Oh dear. It’s been two months since I last posted. Thats not good.

Reason for that, well the last post was 5 days before I started shift work, and I’m still settling into it. My birthday has been and gone, but theres nothing to write about there. In fact there hasnt been anything to write about at all, until today.

You see I was browsing the website of the local newspaper, when I found a travesty. The pub we all love, and people come a long way to join me there now and then is in a bitter battle with its new owners.

The Rising Sun in Epsom is well loved by all I have taken there (except Paul that is) because it dares to be different. You won’t find any of your usual beers available, instead you will see imported products from around the globe, as well as draugh ales from the local micro-brewery in reigate - Pilgrim. Many a night have i drunk the draught Normandy Cider, a half of the 8% Belgian La Chouffe, or a bottle of Schneiderweiss in its huge accompanying glass. Unfortunately Youngs have bought the pub, and are demanding that Pilgrim Ales go, Youngs come in along with your usual Guinness, Kronenbourg, Smiths, Fosters et al. If I wanted that lot I’d go to the Youngs pub round the corner.

So have a look at savetheriser.org and pledge your support.

A few weeks back, I was lucky enough to win a free mini-cruise to Amsterdam. So I recruited Jim into the plan and for this weekend, it started on a Thursday. I set off to meet Jim at Woking, and armed with a couple of cans of fuel AKA beer I met him on his train to London. Beer consumed and London arrival complete, we had to dash to an adjacent train to head back to Surbiton (which we had sped through about 20 minutes previously.) You see Jim had been able to take advantage of Megatrain, meaning Portsmouth – London for £2.50, but meaning he had to go all the way to London. What Time?

Thanks to the dashing at Waterloo, time for beer was available at Surbiton, although we both opted for cider on this occasion and regretted it once the barman asked for cash. Alcohol consumed, and bus caught home, bed called as the journey to Newcastle would start early, with a train at 0610!

We woke up at 0500, but I actually woke at about 0700, when after a ride on a train, and a tube (neither of which I recall) got me to Kings X and Burger King for breakfast!

Now I could have posted all that from the train to Newcastle as it was equipped with WiFi, but it was so slow that I chose to use the iBook as a DVD player to pass the time away. Watching Scrubs can get quite addictive and make time fly. Meanwhile Jim had the same experience with Hustle. Much to Jim’s amazement the train was early into Newcastle, so we arrived at 1135, and the bus to the ship left at 1500. As the train came in, we spotted a left luggage facility which we decided to use for our 3 ½ hours in town. However on handing our bags over we were asked how we found the office, we told them we were lucky enough to spot the small signage.

Soon after, a friend met us for a ‘few’ beers in a couple of Newcastle’s hostelries – and the few turned out to be a few more than expected. Newcastle All too soon it was time to head back to the poorly signed left luggage facility, and onto the big white DFDS bus parked outside. After forcing our way through the Newcastle traffic (I’d forgotten how bad it was) and we were at the check in desk (after navigating past a group of people who couldn’t decide if they were ready to check-in or not.).

We found our cabin before the girl with the key found us, and was incredibly apologetic for not seeing us head down the corridor and open the cabin before we got there. After dumping bags, we had a look around, bought expensive salmon bagels and happened to walk through a bar. It would be rude not to stop for a beer now wouldn’t it! We also ordered some nuts, which were bizarrely served in a wine glass.

Soon after food a sensible decision was made. Following the beers already consumed today, coupled with the early start, and a big day to follow in Amsterdam we headed back to the cabin where we watched some more DVD’s and got an early night.

We woke to the sight of a very gloomy North Sea, with rain tipping down. Unfortunately despite the amount of water falling from the sky, the amount of water in the North Sea, the ships plumbing seemed unable to cope with the task of supplying any water to the ships taps, showers or toilets, and we were still 2 hours away from the shore.

Anyways after finally getting off the ship, we made our way to the terminal (which had no working gents) to the buses to town What Beer shall I have?– where we jumped on the first tram and made our way to the Heineken museum (which did have working lavs). Anyways the Heineken museum is an odd place, with bits about how they make the beer, the history of the company, a presentation on the life of a Heineken bottle and of course free beer.

With the museum have whetted our appetite, we went in search of more beer and Jim tried something to eat in the café we found. At this point it starts to get a bit drunk on my part, as we went from bar to bar to bar, and must have drunk at least 7 beers on my own count, Troubleone of them being Desperados. I kept true to my word and made Jim ring a vast quantity of people in his phone book before we headed back to the bus, via a few more bars! Quite how we made the bus I don’t quite know!

Back aboard ship we found running water in evidence, so a shower was in order, before I had a go at a slot machine and took away €75! Shortly after food the bar called, which was rammed full and beer was definitely off the menu following the earlier bar crawl so we opted for coke, watched a bit off the band before having the day take it’s toll and retire for the 3rd early night in a row.

All too soon we were back in Newcastle, and apart from the slowest immigration process I have seen, we were off relatively quickly. A wake up tea and coffee were in order whilst we waited for our friend to meet us, when we headed for a walk along the Tyne before realising Jim no longer was in possession of his rail tickets home. Dashing back to the station they were retrieved having been found at Costa Coffee, and a quick drink in the pub before two incredibly busy trains back to London.

Oh and for an example of how crazy the Heineken museum is - click here to see this video we were able to make.
